The Backyard: America's Favorite Room
And why July is when the garden finally starts giving back.
What a weekend - Celebrating 250 years of America! We hosted, we attended, we gathered, we connected. And while the fireworks have faded, the sparklers have burned out, the red, white, and blue decorations are slowly being tucked away for another year…
..We all can acknowledge that Fourth of July weekend is the true spark of SUMMER!
July has a way of drawing us outside. The grill gets fired up a little more often. Friends linger on the patio after dinner. Children run barefoot through the grass until the fireflies begin to appear. Fresh lemonade finds its way onto the porch, and evenings somehow feel a little longer.
For generations, the American backyard has been so much more than a patch of grass. It’s where birthday parties are celebrated, gardens are tended, stories are shared, and traditions are passed from one generation to the next. It’s where neighbors become friends, grandparents teach little hands how to slow down, and families gather around a table under the open sky.
And completely surrounded is the garden.
Back in early spring, you planted with hope. Tiny seeds disappeared beneath the soil. Young plants stretched their roots into the earth. You watered, weeded, mulched, and waited, trusting that your effort would one day be rewarded.
Now, July has arrived.
The tomatoes begin turning their rich shades of red. Zucchini seems to multiply overnight. Herbs are snipped fresh for burgers and summer salads. Sunflowers stand tall, greeting the morning sun, while bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds remind us that a healthy garden nourishes far more than the people who planted it.
This is the season when the garden begins to give back.
Beautiful spaces, providing both nourishing foods, and a peaceful ambiance.
It gives us reasons to gather.
To know that the basil from your caprese salad, came from your little herb garden. Gathering fresh flowers from the yard to create a simple yet sustainable table setting for guests to admire. Reserving all the rinds of the cut watermelons and pineapple to the compost bin, eventually turning into soil for your backyard - because everything can be recycled and reused when you work intentionally with nature.
That’s the beauty of gardening.
It teaches us joy in patience- that what once was a dormant space, lacking energy and vibrance.. only to change seasons and transform into complete life. It reminds us that the best things grow slowly. Every tomato, every sunflower, every butterfly, and every shaded afternoon is the result of countless small acts of faith that happened long before anyone else could see them.
At Evans Homes & Gardens, that’s why July is one of our favorite months. Every day, we hear stories of first harvests, blooming flower beds, and families creating spaces they’ll enjoy for years to come. It’s a joy to celebrate those moments with our community and help gardeners keep their landscapes thriving through the heart of summer.
So before the season slips by, we encourage you to spend a little more time outside. Harvest a few vegetables for dinner. Cut fresh flowers for the kitchen table. Invite friends over for an evening under the stars. Sit quietly with your morning coffee and notice the bees at work. Let your backyard become more than part of your home.. let it become the place where all of your favorite memories are made.
After all, the backyard has always been America’s favorite room.
