More than a garden center

Because it is actually not all about buying plants

Most people think they come to a garden center to buy their favorite plant, or check out a new flower in bloom.

But after spending more time here, we realize that its usually not the real reason.

Yes, people leave with flowers, shrubs, vegetable starts, or a tree for the backyard. But before they ever load up their car, something else almost always happens.

A conversation.

Someone wants to show us a picture of the tomato they finally got to ripen. Someone is trying to figure out why their hydrangeas won’t bloom. Someone else just harvested their first cucumber and can’t wait to tell somebody who understands why that feels like such a victory.

And that’s when it clicked.

Garden centers aren’t just places to buy plants. They’re places where you can find other people who speak the same language.

The language of seasons.

Of patience.

Of hope.

Of trying something, watching it fail, learning from it, and planting again anyway.

The perseverance and obedience it takes to continue to learn; because in gardening, you are a forever student.

Gardening has a way of slowing us down. It asks us to pay attention—to the weather, the soil, the insects, the birds, and the tiny changes that happen day by day. It teaches us that not everything happens on our timeline, and that some of the best things in life can’t be rushed.

Maybe that’s why the conversations here feel different.

They aren’t rushed. They’re genuine. They’re filled with curiosity, encouragement, shared lessons, and the quiet excitement of discovering something new.

Whether you’re caring for a few pots on a patio or tending an acre of land, no matter the expertise, we all have one thing in common— we are learning together.

Those conversations have reminded us that what we’re growing here isn’t just gardens.

We’re growing community.

That’s why, behind the scenes, we’ve been creating spaces throughout the property where people can simply slow down and stay awhile. Places to sit under the trees, enjoy the landscape, meet a neighbor, or strike up a conversation with someone who loves growing things just as much as you do.

We’re also dreaming bigger.

We’re working toward creating spaces for workshops, hands-on learning, and gatherings where we can share knowledge, celebrate the seasons, and help more people feel confident caring for the land they’ve been given.

Because we believe gardening is about more than beautiful landscapes.

It’s about stewardship.

It’s about connection.

It’s about getting our hands in the soil and remembering that we were created to live a little closer to the earth.

Every conversation we’ve shared with you over the past few months has reminded us that this place is becoming something bigger than a retail garden center.

It’s becoming a gathering place.

So the next time you stop by, don’t feel like you have to be “shopping.”

Come walk around.

Tell us what’s growing.

Ask your questions.

Share your successes—and your failures.

Pull up a chair if one is open.

Because the best thing growing at Evans Homes & Gardens might just be the community we’re building together.
