The Uninvited Guests: When the Deer Eat the Garden

Every season brings its own challenges — this fall, ours have four legs, big eyes, and an appetite for everything we plant.

The deer have been feasting on our crops lately — from the beet greens to the sweet potato vines, it’s become an all-you-can-eat buffet out there. Farming always tests our patience, and this year it’s testing our creativity too.

We brought out a local hunter to help restore balance and protect the fields. Sometimes that’s the reality of growing food — it’s not always sunshine and sprouts. We share the land with wildlife, and finding that harmony is part of the ongoing lesson.

Still, there’s beauty in the struggle. Every nibble reminds us that we’re part of a living ecosystem — and that nature always finds a way to remind us who’s really in charge.

But what can we do?
Should we try one of those ultrasonic solar-powered motion sensor animal repellants?

Would a few rows of marigolds or garlic border plantings really keep them away?
Maybe a homemade cayenne spray would help — or should we finally invest in that ten-foot fence everyone swears by? (They seem to be able to jump higher than I ever remembered!)

We’ve heard everything from hanging Irish Spring soap bars to using wind chimes and reflective tape. Do any of these tricks actually work?

If you’ve ever had your garden raided by deer, you know the heartbreak (and humor) that comes with it. We’d love to hear your experiences — what’s worked for you, and what hasn’t? We would love to learn from your wisdom!

All in all, the season is treating us well with still an abundance of produce. Come visit us in person, we would love to have you:
