 Pollution prevention

Pollution Prevention

Chemical Storage. Store all chemicals, petroleum and other harmful products inside or under cover in their original containers or properly labeled secondary containers with tight fitting lids. Store them away from ignition sources, food storage areas, and sewer and storm drains.

E-Mail Notifications. Sign up for email notifications from Clean Air Partners regarding air quality and keep employees informed of what they can do to reduce air pollution.

Waste Management. Use the County’s Ecowise program to manage hazardous waste that is under 220 pounds.

Company Vehicles. Dispose, recycle, and collect the proper materials when performing maintenance on company vehicles.

Use the Appropriate Bins. Have bins placed at various locations, usually the entrances and exits, parking lots and appropriate places. Ensure that they are used correctly and emptied regularly.

Code Orange, Red, and Purple Days. Encourage use of car pooling if the need for vehicles is necessary on these days. Prohibit lawn mowing, equipment fueling and maintenance.

Batteries. Use rechargeable batteries when batteries are needed.

Purchasing of Hazardous Products. Buy hazardous products in small quantities and limit access to authorized staff.

Toxic vs. Non-Toxic Materials. Replace toxic materials with non-toxic materials when possible, such as the ink in markers and pens with non-toxic materials.

Emission in Buildings and Furniture. Use natural or low-emission buildings and furniture materials.

Cleaning Products. Use safer alternatives to harmful cleaning products and practices, and have the staff well informed of the cleaning practices. Try to use multi-purpose cleansers instead of many specialized cleansers.

Fertilizer Usage. When the need for fertilizer arises, test the soil to determine which fertilizer is best and apply accordingly.

Tool Usage. Use manual or electric powered tools for lawn care, landscaping, and snow removal. Avoid use of gas powered tools.

Herbicides and pesticides. Avoid the use of herbicides and pesticides; hand-pick weeds and use less toxic pesticides, and use only on an as-needed schedule. Use pesticides labeled “caution” rather than “warning” or “danger.”
