Sun Tea: The Easiest Way To Use Solar Power

By Susan

Oftentimes we find ourselves tired, wound up, sad, overwhelmed, distraught, and sometimes just parched. Modern society likes to use quick fixes for all of these things, something you take and forget about. But during the summer we can each utilize solar power in the most simple way while making tasty drinks that will help sooth your common day worries.

All you need is a little aluminum foil, water, tea, and a glass jar (I do not recommend plastic because it leaches when heated). I use either the sun tea container I found at salvation army, or one of the used 32 oz glass jars left over from juice. I have found that clear wine bottles also work good, just make sure you have enough space to add the tea.

Fill your jar with water and add your tea (depending on how strong you like it 1 tea bag to 8 oz of water). Cover and set your jar outside on top of the aluminum foil (I use an old take out container. Pie crust holders also work well.) in direct sunlight. It is best to get your sun tea out by noon because that is when you will get the best light, but I have put tea out as late as 1:30 pm and still had success. Just remember the later you put it out the longer it will take for the tea leaves to steep.

Set outside at 11:30 am, ready at 12:30 pm.
Pour over ice and enjoy.

Time Tables at Noon
32 oz Warm Water - About 45 minutes
1 gal Warm Water - About an hour

32 oz Cool Water (≈750) - About an hour
1 gal Cool Water (≈750) - About 80 minutes

Note - If you set the water out in the morning it will steep faster when in the sun.
