Why should you compost?

 

Composting takes the large, environmentally unwieldy soil-plant-soil-plant cycle and reduces it to a harmless size. When you throw your waste in the trash, it feeds into a landfill. It cannot decompose, which is quite a waste of fresh organic nutrients. If it was allowed to break down as it would in a compost pile, it would produce rich, fertile new soil that can grow the next generation of plants. Therefore, composting lets you capture the entire cycle and put it to work in a garden without swelling landfills.

How to get involved

All you have to do to get your composting going is collect compostable matierials at your home throughout a week or so, and bring them by the nursery! Here is a list of what you can and cannot bring:

What To bring:
  1. Any and all fruit and vegetable scraps or uneaten parts of the plant
  2. Used Paper Towels
  3. Coffee Grinds and filters
  4. Tea Bags and Used Tea Leaves
  5. Egg Shells
  6. Uneaten or unused Nuts And Beans
  7. Food Scraps From after meals (not containing meats)
  8. Hair clippings and Lint from the dryer
  9. Old or moldy bread
  10. Any type of Grain Products (rice, pasta, cereal, oatmeal)
  11. Old or spoiled rice, coconut, hemp or soy milk (also includes tofu)
  12. Old or moldy Cheese and yogurt
  13. Ash from a fire place
  14. Sawdust/woodchips

DO NOT BRING:

  1. Bones and Meat products
  2. Sticks or tree limbs
  3. Medications / Pills
  4. Plastics, Metals or Glass
  5. Wood
  6. Pet waste
  7. Milk
  8. Weeds
  9. Grass Clippings
  10. Leaves

General Rule of thumb (not always but mostly): If you can identify something as growing directly from the earth it is mostlikely compostable and we probably take it, please call to find out.
