Think Green TV

By Mary Evans
April 2010

Marylanders plant trees program got recent attention from Montgomery County’s cable TV network and featured Evans Homes and Gardens as a participating garden center giving $25.00 coupons on native tree sales. Maryland dept. of natural resources was represented by Scott Hymes and he spoke about the monetary value of trees to every Marylander. For example:

  1. Trees on the south side of the house provide shade and can reduce air conditioning costs by 25%.
  2. Trees in the front of the house add beauty and can increase the value of the property by $10,000.
  3. Trees soak up 9,000 gallons of runoff water a year, reducing the load on streams and rivers and even water treatment facilities.

Scott also spoke how the governor of Maryland, Martin O’Malley, takes great pride and personal interest in the success of the program. The funding comes from a legal settlement with mid western power companies that had to be used for sustainable practices in Maryland. The program directly benefits the homeowner because the $25.00 goes directly into their pocket and makes their investment in native trees more rewarding.

Information for viewing of the show:

Saturday, April 17th at 3 pm on Access Montgomery Cable Channel 21.
