Compost Tea

By Susan
March 2010

Good for your garden, good for the earth
We all know the benefits our plants get from nutrient rich compost mixed into the soil, but many of us just don't have the time to mix dirt all day like we can here at Evans Homes and Gardens. So today we want to tell you about Compost Tea. Although a google search will provide you with many expensive compost tea systems and places to buy "special compost tea", essentially all you need is water and compost.

To start your Tea you will need about one cup compost to one gallon of water. Mixthese together in a bucket, (if you're feeling extra motivated you can add a small air pump to the bucket to make bubbles while you let it sit so the organisms get a super boost) and let sit for a few days. Many people advocate adding a little molasses to rev up the organisms as they grow, but success has been attained without it. Once you have let your concoction sit for a few days the tea can be used as a mist on the leaves to help foster a positive surface environment or it can be poured directly onto the plant bed to feed your plants and enrich the soil. For a mist pour the liquid into a mister container through a strainer or cheese cloth, leaving as much of the soil in the bucket. For use as plant food just pour the entire contents of the bucket over the roots of the plants. Then sit back and enjoy some sun tea as your plants enjoy the fruits of your (minimal) labor.
